Track Cycling Courses
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. I don't know how to ride a bike at all. Can I sign up for the track cycling course?

No. Track bikes have no braking system and do not allow coasting, offering an intense sense of speed. Students must possess basic two-wheel cycling balance and handling skills. If you do not know how to ride a bike at all, we recommend enrolling in our “Adult/Children Beginner Cycling Course” first.

Q2. How many lessons are required?

  1. Official Standard Procedure: According to the requirements of the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China, students must start from Stage 1 and pass the assessments for Stages 1, 2, and 3 in phases. Generally, beginners need to participate in 3 lessons (3 hours per lesson) of specialized training, corresponding to the teaching and assessment of the three stages.
  2. Fast-Track Certification (Experienced Riders): If you already possess good bike handling skills (such as experience with road or mountain bikes), INVIS provides Fast-Track Support. Coaches will evaluate your performance, and you can complete the condensed practice for all three stages in as little as 1 lesson (3 hours), directly preparing for the exam and saving significant time.
  3. Steady Progress (Teens or Beginners): If you need more time to adapt to the 45-degree steep banks or Fixed Gear handling, it is recommended to complete the three lessons step-by-step to ensure safety and build sufficient confidence before taking the final assessment.

Students must complete Level 1, 2, and 3 courses recognized by the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China in stages. Each level includes an assessment. After passing all assessments, you can apply to the Association for the Track Pass to officially access the Hong Kong Velodrome track.

Q4. Can students with SEN (Special Educational Needs) sign up for the course?

We welcome students of all abilities to try cycling, but track cycling carries specific safety risks. Therefore, the following arrangements are in place:
  1. Safety as Priority: Track cycling takes place at the Hong Kong Velodrome where speeds are fast and bikes have no brakes. Students must be able to understand and instantly execute coach’s instructions (e.g., yielding, decelerating, observing signal lights) while moving at high speeds to ensure the safety of themselves and other track users.
  2. Pre-assessment: We recommend parents or students contact us before enrolling to provide details of the student’s specific situation (such as concentration, communication skills, or physical coordination). Coaches will assess the student’s foundation to determine if they are suitable for the track.
  3. Individual Teaching Advice: If a student finds it difficult to focus or requires extra care in a group setting (1:10 ratio), for safety reasons, we usually suggest starting with a “Private Technical Class.” Once stable handling confidence is built on flat ground, we will evaluate progression to track training.
  4. Age 11 and Height Restriction: Students must still meet the mandatory requirements of being 11 years old and at least 146cm tall to enroll in the CAHK Track Pass course.

Q5. Do parents need to be present to accompany the student?

Not necessarily, it depends on the parents’ arrangements:
  1. Venue Restrictions: Since track cycling courses are held on the Hong Kong Velodrome track, for safety reasons, parents are not allowed to enter the track area (the wooden cycling track zone). Parents may choose to observe from the spectator stands or public areas of the Velodrome.
  2. Student Independence: Track courses require students to have basic independence, including following the coach’s instructions, putting on protective gear by themselves, and controlling the bike. As long as the student (aged 11 or above) can take care of themselves, parents do not necessarily need to stay on-site for the entire session.
  3. Drop-off & Pick-up Advice: We recommend that parents be present for drop-off before class starts and pick-up after it ends. If an assessment is involved, please ensure the student brings all necessary identification documents for verification.

Q6. Does the course include a bike and helmet? Do I need to bring my own equipment?

Course fees already include the rental of track-specific bikes and basic protective gear, allowing students to enroll with ease:
  1. Equipment Provided: We provide track bikes (with toe clip pedals) and helmet rental.
  2. Track Bike Specifications: Students must use specialized track bikes (Fixed Gear) that meet track requirements; other types of bicycles are not permitted on the track.
  3. Clipless Pedal (Lock Pedal) Arrangement:
    • ⚠️ Mandatory Requirement: If students are accustomed to using cycling shoes (cleats), they must bring their own clipless pedals (and corresponding shoes) and notify the coach before class to arrange installation.
    • Flat Pedals Provided: For beginners or students without cycling shoes, we provide basic flat pedals with toe clips.
  4. Hydration and Hygiene Arrangements:
    • ⚠️ No Liquids on Track: To protect the wooden flooring, drinking or carrying liquids is strictly prohibited within the track area. Students must go to the designated rest area outside the track to hydrate.
    • Bring Your Own Water: Training is physically demanding; please bring sufficient drinking water to consume during break times.
  5. Clothing Requirements:
    • Please wear athletic shoes and tight-fitting sports trousers (wide-leg trousers are strictly prohibited to prevent them from getting caught in the drivetrain).

Q7. What are the qualifications of the coaches/instructors?

  • Certified Instructors: All INVIS Cycling instructors hold professional instructor certificates and possess professional teaching qualifications.
  • Training Provider: INVIS Cycling itself is a provider for instructor training. Beyond teaching students, we are responsible for training professional instructors within the industry, ensuring our teaching standards remain at the forefront of the field.

Q8. How many people are in each class? Can I request a specific coach/instructor?

To ensure safety and comply with track requirements, we have strict arrangements regarding participant ratios:
  1. Class Size: The maximum capacity is 20 people per track cycling class. We maintain a 1:10 instructor-to-student ratio (i.e., 1 professional coach for every 10 students) to ensure every student receives adequate care and guidance on the track.
  2. Assigned Coaches: In principle, track classes are taught by the INVIS professional coaching team on a rotational basis. Students cannot request a specific coach. All our coaches possess CAHK recognized qualifications and are familiar with Velodrome regulations and certification procedures, ensuring consistent teaching quality.
  3. Class Threshold: While the maximum is 20 people, a minimum of 5 people is required to form a class. If there are insufficient participants, we will contact students to arrange a class with a surcharge or reschedule.

Enrollment in designated courses can earn you miles, but miles rewards are subject to the relevant terms and conditions.

Please note that miles rewards can only be earned by the participant personally and cannot be claimed by others. For example, parents cannot use their own Cathay member accounts to earn miles for their children’s courses.

All relevant information (including Cathay membership number and name) must be proactively provided for registration before the class begins. If the information is not submitted before the class, the corresponding miles will not be reissued.

Q10. Is there a trial lesson?

There are no trial lessons for track cycling courses. The main reasons are as follows:
  1. Assessment System: Track cycling courses are designed according to the “Level 1 to 3” assessment standards of the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China. The goal is to help students obtain the “Track Pass.” Each lesson has specific teaching progress and assessment content, so full participation starting from Level 1 is required.
  2. Safety Considerations: The operation of a track bike (Fixed Gear) is very different from a regular bicycle. Additionally, the wooden track features 45-degree steep banks. Students need to systematically learn basic handling and safety rules to ensure safety before entering the track; therefore, a “one-off trial lesson” format is not suitable.
  3. Venue Booking Restrictions: Booking slots for the Hong Kong Velodrome track are limited. Courses must proceed according to pre-arranged quotas and participant numbers, making it difficult to arrange spots for single trial lessons.
If you would like to experience what track cycling is all about, we recommend browsing the course syllabus on our website or contacting us via WhatsApp for more details.

Q11. Do I need to sign up for many lessons at once? Can I enroll lesson by lesson?

Track cycling courses can be enrolled lesson by lesson based on the student’s progress, but the following session duration and progression rules must be followed:
  1. 3 Hours Per Lesson: Each track cycling session is standardized at 3 hours. Due to equipment checks, safety briefings, track practice, and assessments, sessions cannot be split into smaller durations (e.g., attending only 1.5 hours).
  2. Enrollment by Stage: While you can pay per lesson, as the courses are designed according to CAHK “Level 1, 2, and 3,” students must pass the assessment of the previous stage before enrolling in the next.
  3. Fast-Track Progress: If you have a solid foundation, the coach can help you complete practices for multiple stages within one lesson (3 hours) after evaluation, saving both time and money.
  4. Flexible Arrangement: You can enroll in the next lesson based on your own schedule once a time slot is confirmed; there is no need to prepay for the entire series upfront.

Q12. Can I reschedule after signing up?

Since track cycling course spots are limited and classes are held irregularly, spots are locked once booking is confirmed. If you need to reschedule, an administrative fee will be charged according to the following standards:
  1. Rescheduling Fees:
    • More than 7 days before class: A $250 handling fee per request.
    • 7 days or less before class: A $550 handling fee per request.
  2. Availability Risks: As track classes are not held on a regular basis, even if the handling fee is paid, there is no guarantee that suitable sessions will be available for you to join in the short term. If sessions are full or no new classes are scheduled, students may need to wait for a longer period.
  3. No Refunds for Cancellation: Once booking is confirmed, fees will not be refunded if the course is cancelled or if the student cannot match other available class times.

Q13. What are the arrangements for inclement weather or rain?

Track cycling training is held on the indoor track of the Hong Kong Velodrome. The advantage is that it is completely unaffected by rainy weather:
  1. Unaffected by Rain/Thunderstorms: Since the track is indoors, classes will proceed as usual during general rain, thunderstorm warnings, or Amber/Red Rainstorm Signals.
  2. Extreme Weather Arrangements: In the event of a Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above, Black Rainstorm Warning, or extreme conditions resulting in venue closure, the course will be cancelled.
  3. Cancellation Mechanism: If a cancellation is confirmed, we will notify students via WhatsApp at least 1.5 hours before the assembly time. Please stay tuned to your mobile messages.
  4. Travel Safety: Although the indoor venue is unaffected, we advise students to monitor real-time weather and traffic conditions while traveling to the Velodrome, prioritizing personal safety. If traffic is severely disrupted due to weather, please contact us as soon as possible.

Q14. What happens if I fail the assessment? Is there a re-test?

Since this is a comprehensive fast-track course, the goal is to help students obtain certification as quickly as possible. If the coach evaluates that your performance has not yet met the standards, students will simply need to re-enroll in the relevant level to continue practicing. Please note that no discounts or offers are available for re-enrollment, and the fee will be calculated at the original price per class.

Not included. After passing the assessment, students must apply to the LCSD individually to redeem the physical “Track Pass” and pay the administrative fee (currently $100, subject to the latest announcement by the LCSD).
